“Cheena Vala”- that’s what the people of Kerala call the Chinese fishing nets. If you ever visit Kochi, this attraction should be your top priority to see and experience. The Chinese fishing nets are said to have been brought to the city in the 14th century by Chinese explorers during the Portuguese era. Since then, they have become an iconic symbol of Kochi.

Made of teak wood and bamboo poles, the Chinese fishing nets are fixed installations that dip towards the water, resembling giant hammocks. They operate purely based on the principle of balance. It takes more than four fishermen to manage each net.

As you pull back the net (with the help of the local fishermen) and sing ‘Aylesa Aylesa,’ this experience will become an unforgettable memory. This natural beauty attracts plenty of foreign tourists.

St Francis Church, built in 1503, is one of the oldest churches in India. It is one of the best places to visit in Kochi. 

After Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route from Europe to India, two Portuguese noble explorers and navigators arrived and, with the permission of the Raja of Cochin, constructed a fort. Within this fort, they built a church with a wooden structure, originally dedicated to St. Bartholomew. In 1506, Francisco de Almeida, a Portuguese viceroy reconstructed the wooden church in stone and masonry.

In 1663, the Dutch took control of the church. Later, in 1804, it was surrendered to the Anglican Church. The Church of South India (CSI) took over the church in 1949.

This scenic stretch, also known as Abdul Kalam Marg, is a walkway extending from the Jankar Jetty (North) to the Ernakulam Boat Jetty (South). Also known as the Dutch Palace, Mattancherry Palace was built and gifted by the Portuguese to the King of Cochin in 1545. 

It has now been converted into a museum and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside the palace, you can find murals, portraits, and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi. This includes paintings, coins, stamps, drawings, umbrellas, ivory palanquins, and other items used by royals.

Commissioned by the then Governor of the Madras Presidency, Lord Willingdon, this is India’s largest artificial island. Bolgatty Palace, now a heritage hotel resort, boasts a rich history. Built in 1744 by the Dutch, it served as the Governor’s palace for the Commander of Dutch Malabar. In 1909, it was leased to the British, and several notable British governors stayed there. After India’s independence in 1947, the palace was converted into a heritage hotel and became state property. It’s the most beautiful place in Kochi.

Also known as Kotta Palli or Kottepalli, Santa Cruz Basilica is one of the 34 basilicas in India. Renowned for its exquisite Indo-European and Gothic architecture, it is noted for its grandeur and use of colours.

Originally built in 1505 by the Portuguese as a church, it was elevated to a cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558. However, in the 17th century, following British intervention, the cathedral was demolished and rebuilt in 1905.

The Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568 by the Paradesi Jewish Community, is located in the corner of Jew Town and is the oldest synagogue. Built by Portuguese in the 1503 AD, Pallipuram Fort is one of the oldest surviving European forts constructed in India. Located in the Vypeen Island, this fort is known for its architecture. Its hexagonal shape is the highlight and the 34-foot-tall fort has been built with laterite, mortar and wood. The fort has a cellar, which was used to store gunpowder.

Sprawled across 27.4 hectares, Mangalvanam Bird Sanctuary is one of the best places in Kochi. It houses an 18-acre Mangrove tree reserve and a shallow lake. Also known as Ernakulathappan Temple, this place of worship is one of the seven royal temples of Kochi Maharajas. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva in a Gourisankara form, facing the sea towards the West and is believed to be Swayambhu (divinely originated).
